ELISABETH CARTER
Dr Carter is a consultant, author, criminologist and forensic linguist. She is the UKs leading scholar of romance fraud, as well as an authority on all types of fraud; her research and expertise focuses on the language of manipulation and sits at the intersection of crime, language and the law. She was awarded the British Society of Criminology’s book prize and has an impressive body of peer-reviewed fraud research and authorship of public-facing guidance nationally and internationally in academia and practice. She is the Outstanding Tacking Economic Crime Professional 2022 as awarded by the Tackling Economic Crime Awards (TECAs), the gold standard across the public, private and third sector in recognising excellence in tackling economic crime.
She holds a Doctorate in Criminology, a Master’s degree in Criminology, a Master’s degree in Criminological Research and a BA (Hons) in Psycholinguistics and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her work is highly valued by financial institutions and the police, with many successful partnership initiatives with multiple police forces, banks, work with charities, local government and with clients in the online dating sector. She also engages regularly with the media, appearing on For Love or Money (BBC1), Word of Mouth (BBC R4), Dirty Rotten Scammers (BBC1) and Moneybox (BBC R4). She is also an Associate Professor of Criminology at the University of Kingston.

TIM DAY
Dr Day has been specialising in fraud investigations with Local Authority law enforcement for 14 years. He has worked all aspects of criminal investigations and has a proven track record of successful prosecution of offenders. His empirical practitioner-research is greatly valued by police, Trading Standards and Adult Care Service practitioners alike and he has designed and delivered training to Thames Valley Police, Hertfordshire Police, Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards, and Hertfordshire Trading Standards. Since 2016 he has held the role of Lead Officer in Doorstep crime, Fraud and Consumer Vulnerability for the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, providing advice and guidance on best-practice to Trading Standards nationally. He has a doctorate in Criminal Justice Studies, a Master’s in Criminology and a BA (Hons) in Sociology and Criminology. He has published peer-reviewed work on rogue trading, distraction burglary and doorstep crime and presents his research at conferences and Universities throughout the country.
